HEXACO Personality Model
A six-dimensional refinement of the Big Five that adds Honesty-Humility β a factor that captures fairness, sincerity, and modesty better than any Big Five dimension does.
What it is
HEXACO is a six-factor personality model developed by Kibeom Lee and Michael Ashton. Its six dimensions are Honesty-Humility, Emotionality, eXtraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, and Openness to Experience. The framework grew out of cross-cultural lexical studies that found a sixth factor β Honesty-Humility β emerging consistently across languages, but missing from the Big Five.
Why six factors
When researchers ran personality lexical studies in languages including Korean, Hungarian, Polish, Italian, German, and French, a sixth factor reliably appeared alongside the Big Five. This factor captures traits like sincerity, fairness, greed-avoidance, and modesty. Lee and Ashton (2004) argued that compressing this factor into Agreeableness β as the Big Five does β loses important information about ethical behavior.
The six dimensions
- Honesty-Humility. Sincerity, fairness, greed-avoidance, modesty. Predicts ethical behavior and resistance to corruption better than any Big Five dimension.
- Emotionality. Anxiety, sentimentality, fearfulness, dependence. Maps roughly to Big Five Neuroticism but reframed to include warmth and attachment.
- eXtraversion. Social self-esteem, sociability, liveliness. Similar to Big Five Extraversion.
- Agreeableness. Forgiveness, gentleness, flexibility, patience. Note: HEXACO Agreeableness is reactive (responding to others), whereas Big Five Agreeableness includes ethical concern that HEXACO factors into Honesty-Humility.
- Conscientiousness. Organization, diligence, perfectionism, prudence.
- Openness to Experience. Aesthetic appreciation, inquisitiveness, creativity, unconventionality.
When HEXACO outperforms Big Five
HEXACO consistently shows stronger prediction of:
- Workplace deviance and counterproductive behavior
- Bribery and ethical compromise in lab tasks
- "Dark triad" traits (Machiavellianism, narcissism, psychopathy) β all of which load on low Honesty-Humility
- Sexual harassment proclivity and exploitative behavior
Limitations
- Newer than the Big Five, so its predictive validity has been studied in fewer outcomes.
- The split between HEXACO Agreeableness and Honesty-Humility is conceptually crisp but takes practice to interpret.
- Like all trait models, it describes tendencies, not destiny.
